USA Swimming 18/U Championships Planning Update: A special Advisory Committee appointed by General Chair Ellen Johnston, led by Mark Wollen and Nick Cavataro, met via ZOOM on Sat. Oct 17 to discuss the possibility of CSI sponsoring an 18/U Qualifier Meet and/or 18/U Championship Invite in the immediate period leading up to the deadline for the USA National 18/U Championship Meet (deadline Dec. 13). On the call were Nick Cavataro (GYWD), Mark Wollen (Program Operations), Sean Farrell (CDOG), Dennis Flores (ZEUS), and Brennan Morris (CPAC). Summary: Where there are no firm commitments at this time for a host site for an 18/U championship meet, it is the feeling of the advisory group, that the RTC (Return To Competition) meets being held by some teams across the LSC could be used to qualify for an LSC only 18/U championship meet to be held over two days – in perhaps 4-6 mini-sessions – at a site TBA and funded by CSI. Qualification for such an 18/U Championship would be restricted to the top 8-10 available swimmers from times held prior to Nov. 23, with a possibility of considering times used from earlier this year, to qualify. The event would be a timed final, with no spectators and held either Dec 5-6 or Dec 12-13. The goal is to give these top 18-under swimmers a chance to compete outside the RTC meets, and advance these times to the USA Swimming for consideration. There was also discussion of Regional-style 18/U RTC qualifier meets and a Regional 18/U Championship; however, the window is tight on getting multiple events moving at this time, but not out of possibility if host and facility were available. The Virtual Awards Banquet will be held Sunday, November 22, 2020, at 2 PM, via Zoom. Coaches of invitees will receive the Zoom invitation and will forward it to invited athletes.
