Finishing Fast and First
Elizabeth Pelton breaks National Record
Daniel Madwed's National First-Place 200 Fly

Connecticut's fastest athletes continued their championship season by attending various national and sectional meets held around the country. Connecticut Swimming should be proud; our athletes performed well and notably were the outstanding swims by a young group of senior athletes.

At YMCA Nationals in Orlando, FL, Elizabeth Pelton, 12, (WYW) broke the National Age Group Record (previously held by Beth Botsford '94) in the 11/12 Girls 100Y backstroke swimming a 55.97. This is a USA Swimming National Championship qualifying time and breaks the CSI Resident Record for 11/12 girls. Elizabeth went on to break 3 more CSI resident records: Girls 11/12 50Y backstroke; 50Y freestyle and 100Y freestyle. Katie Gardocki, 14, (BEAR) swam a 9:52.84 in the 1000Y freestyle at the FL NSCA Junior Championship, finished 2nd and is currently ranked 13th in the USA for swims this season. Katie achieved a National Championship qualifying time in the 1000 and 1650Y freestyle events and broke the CSI 13/14 Girls 1000Y free Resident Record. Later during the meet, another 14 year old, Alicia Mathieu (SNCO) swam the 1650Y freestyle and finished 7th with a 16:37.73 and also achieved USA Swimming National Championship qualifying time. Alicia now holds the CSI 13/14 Girls 1650Y free Resident Record. At 17, Daniel Madwed (SHKS) finished first in the 200M butterfly (1:57.56) at USA Swimming's National Championship and is ranked first in the USA for this season. Dan's time is the 7th fastest time ever swum by an American in the 200M fly. Daniel also finished 2nd in the 100 fly and is ranked 4th in the country.  Because of his performance at Nationals, Dan was named to the National B Team. Congratulations to these outstanding young swimmers and their coaches!!

On the Officials front, Mike Huffman, Referee and CSI Official Chair, officiated at the USA Swimming National Championship in Federal Way, WA. Mike has completed National Championship starter training and now is listed as a National Championship starter.  Congratulations, Mike!
