Southern Zone Sectional Meet
March 17-20, 2011
Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Connecticut Swimming was represented by the Aquabears

and Connecticut Aquatic Club last weekend at Southern

Sectionals, hosted by Florida Aquatics at the International

Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Our

teams were just two of 96 teams competing at this event.

Nations from around the world were represented by athletes

from Greece, Macedonia, Philippines, Brazil, Venezuela,

Honduras, Argentina, US Virgin Islands, Barbados, Mexico,

Canada, Zimbabwe, and many more. This being an FINA

recognized meet held in meters (LCM) many swimmers were

in attendance trying to make their National, World or

Olympic Trial cuts.

USA Olympians Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay

displayed their swimming prowess race after race, using walls

and under-waters to erase any lead their competition had

going into the last 50. It was great experience to watch

Olympians showing all swimmers that they compete the same

way racing in prelim heats to make finals. These two

swimming role models spent all afternoon on Saturday

signing autographs and taking photos, then came back at finals

and controlled their races.

Many New England teams were invited to this meet with the

Attleboro Bluefish placing third. Our two small teams from

Connecticut had strong solid swims in all their individual

events. A special congratulations to CAC's Jesssica Hespeler

who placed 22nd the 50 free, 22nd in the 200 free, 15th in

the 100 free, 11th in the 800 free, 9th in the 1500 free and

she placed 5th overall in the 400 free.
