USA Swimming Championship Meets
August 2011 in Palo Alto, CA
USA Swimming held its long course Junior and National Championship meets consecutive weeks in Palo Alto, CA. These meets not only boasted the fastest athletes in the nation but also were the largest USA Championship meets ever held. 1,832 athletes, 372 clubs, 5479 splashes were recorded at the National Championships followed by 1,734 athletes, 470 clubs, and 6,812 splashes at the Junior National Championships. Both meets were held at Stanford University utilizing 10-lane and 8-lane pools for prelim events. Finals (Top 30) were held in the 10-lane pool. The meets were covered by NBC and NBC’s Universal Sports.

Thursday, August 4 saw the Soundview YMCA/Branford Stingrays' (BRS) Emily Barber shatter her own CT Record and the CT Resident Record in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:11.25) with a sizzling 1:10.30 in the prelims, qualifying 19th in the first event of the morning after entering the meet seeded 44th. Following up that swim in the evening finals, the double Olympic Trials qualifier from Guilford, CT lowered her mark even further, clocking a brilliant 1:09.81, placing 16th in the USA. In the 200 meter breaststroke in the preliminaries Saturday August 6 Emily swam a blistering time of 2:31.6. In the evening finals, the double Olympic Trials qualifier continued her rapid rise in USA Swimming with a tremendous swim of 2:30.77, again finishing 16th in the USA. Congratulations to Emily and her long-time Stingray coach, George Miles, CT Swimming's 2011 Senior Coach of the Year on a memorable season! Congratulations as well to KC Moss of NCY, Eric Ronda of WYW, and Christian Higgins also of WYW.
