Connecticut Swimming's Age Group Championship was held July 29 through August 1 at Wesleyan University and Cheshire Community Pool. Over 1,000 athletes competed in 142 events; 3,628 splashes were recorded; 6 CSI records were broken and 87 athletes went on to compete at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championship meet in Rockville, MD.

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers that made this meet a success for our athletes and coaches. Special thanks to Meet Directors Chris Wilson and Cheryl Guetens, and Referees Monica Prangley and Jeff Scobee.

Age Group Coach of the Year
Voted as Age Group Coach of the Year, by his peers, was Marci Berlinski of GLAS.
Marci Berlinski from Glastonbury Swimming was named the 2010 CT Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year. Coach Berlinski became the Head Coach of Glastonbury Swimming in 2006. She was an assistant Zone Team Coach in the spring of 2007 and Head Zone Coach in the winter and spring of 2008. Since Coach Berlinski joined Glastonbury Swimming, the USA team has more than doubled producing 1 Senior National qualifier, 10 Sectional qualifiers, numerous Zone Team qualifiers and tripled the amount of CT Age Group Championship qualifiers.  Swimming has always been and will continue to be a rewarding part of her life.

Letter from Meet Director, Chris Wilson

First, I need to say THANK YOU to all of the parents and volunteers who helped to make this meet tremendously successful!!  It takes many hours of planning and preparation, but nothing happens without the parents and volunteers who officiate, time, marshal, run, post or cheerfully perform any of the other 50 odd jobs necessary to run a championship swim meet.  The past weekend was amazing!

Special thanks to the Mike D’ on the Colorado, the entire computer staff including George, Jim, Suzanne and all of the computer volunteers as well as Laurie Storino and the WYW parents at the office table.  Because of them, we were ready early and found ourselves “waiting” for the official meet start times.  I was told by many that was a rare event.

To all of the officials who were patient with me, especially Monica, who is owed much of the credit for this weekend’s success.

Speaking on behalf of the coaches, officials and other workers, I want to extend a special thanks to the Zeus Swim team for the fabulous food and running hospitality for both Cheshire and Wesleyan!  We had nothing but rave reviews and I truly hope they can do the same next season.

To Cheryl Guetens and the entire CDOG parents group who pull together the Cheshire venue starting at 6AM, proceed to run the meet, then breakdown by 1PM without a trace for open swimming and then come to Wesleyan for finals and work some more.  Not a small feat, but they always make it look easy and are a pleasure to be with.

In closing, a very special thank you to Chris Hug and Nan Cooper.  The time and effort put in by them is unbelievable.  The sessions would have never been able to get going as quickly and as successfully as they did without their unending pre-meet work. Chris, Nan and Monica deserve the credit for the success of this meet.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer.  I look forward to working with all of you again next March.

Chris Wilson
Meet Director
