Swimmer of the Year
Daniel Madwed

This year's recipient of the Swimmer of the Year is Daniel Madwed, SHKS.  His award was presented by his coach, Rick Lewis who summarized Dan's spectacular swim career thus far: Daniel began swimming at the age of 10 ˝.  His first swim meet was the Water Rats Freestyle Frenzy where he swam the 50 Free in 32.46, 100 Free in 1:13.98, and 200 Free in 2:43.47.  Later that season he competed in his first Age Group Championship and then on February 14, 2002, he established his first National Age Group record breaking the 12/under 200 fly mark held by Olympian Michael Phelps.  His time was 2:01.47.  During this past year, he competed in six major meets.  The highlights include: Junior Pan Pacific Games (Maui, HI)- 3 silvers:  100 fly, 200 fly, Medley Relay; World Championship Trials – third in 200 fly narrowly missing becoming a member of US team; Maccabi games (Israel) – 5 gold medals, meet MVP. His time in 200 fly (1:58.15) was 13th in the world for 2005 at that time; and US Summer Nationals – fourth in 200 fly, tenth in 100 fly.

Adapted Swimmer of the Year
Michael Prout, Jr.

Michael Prout is an Elite member of the US Paralympic Team and a 2004 Paralympian.  He broke the American Record in the 100M Freestyle this past summer at the US Paralympic Nationals and earned 3 gold and 3 bronze medals.  Michael swims for BEAR (Head Coach Jon Levine) and currently swims for University of Massachusetts.

ConocoPhillips Service Award
Ed Doernberger

Ed has been involved as a volunteer in the CT Swimming community for a large number of years.  The exact number is hard to determine as his initial certification date on the official's database just says pre-1990.  He has been the meet referee for the last few CT Swimming Senior Championships (both short course and long course).  He is a long-standing member of the CT Swimming officials committee and serves as a clinic facilitator providing training for new officials.  He holds various official certifications at the local, national and national championship levels.  He is also currently serving as our Council-at-Large, providing legal guidance for CT swimming.  Although Ed and I have, at times, had differing opinions about certain topics (and discussion amongst officials is a good thing), the decisions that are made by Ed always have the best interests of the swimmer at heart.  --Presented by Mike Huffman, Officials Chair

Senior Coach of the Year
Jeff Allen

Jeff Allen's award was presented by Coach Representative, Christine Pelham: "As CT Swimming's  Coach Rep I have the privilege of presenting the Senior Coach of the Year Award.  This award, voted on by our peers, is chosen amongst a group of talented nominees that had to meet certain criteria.  This year's recipient is one of the most respected coaches in the nation.  President of the YMCA National Coaches Assoc., NE Field Representative, CT Senior Committee Chair, Member of the Olympic International Operating Committee and with over 27 years of coaching experience, the Head Coach of the 2005 and SC and LC YMCA National Combined and Mens Team Champions, Wilton Y Wahoos Head Coach Jeffrey Allen."

Jeff Allen was unable to attend the banquet and extends his thanks in this letter: "I am sorry I did not make the Connecticut Swimming Awards Banquet on Sunday. I had every intention of doing so, but on my way home from a dual meet in Wilton I got a migraine headache. So sorry to say the rest of the day was awash. I wanted to let you all know how honored I am to receive the Connecticut Swimming Senior Coach of the Year Award. While my name is on the award, I believe this award should list the names of the entire coaching staff of the Wahoos.  Brooks Ensor, Mark Newcombe, Todd Stevens, Steve Dore, and Karen Roth are the ones responsible for the success of the Wahoos. It is the team approach of coaching that has allowed the Wahoos to have the continued success year in and year out. The entire staff gives endlessly to our swimmers each day and makes sure that all their needs are being met, whether is it stroke corrections, motivation, or just being able to listen to a swimmer who might be having a bad day. Please join me in honoring the entire staff of the Wahoos for the success that we have had this past year. On behalf of the Wahoo’s staff I accept this award and thank my peers for taking the time to recognize our work. I hope everyone has a great year in and out of the pool."

Age Group Coach of the Year
Dan Zeek

Dan Zeek has been coaching WEST for three years and has coaches numerous CSI zone teams.  He was the head coach for the 2003 long course zone team.  Under Dan, WEST's program has grown from 60 to 160 swimmers and from 4 Age Group Championship participants to 26. Dan was recognized at the ASCA Clinic this past August. His award was presented by Todd Stevens, Sr. Coach Representative.
