National Times Update
Submitted by Larry Frost, National Times Officer
USA Swimming is
currently in the process of revamping their entire database systems. Presently,
none of the various databases (Top 16, National Times, Registration, etc.) can
talk to each other and much of the same data needs to be entered several times.
Aside from the inefficiencies with this system, there are far greater
opportunities for data to be incorrect. Since there have been so many problems,
USA Swimming has not updated (nor do they plan to) the Individual Times database
so you must look for your times by building the events. For example, use
http://www4.usa-swimming.org/infodrv/star_perf/STARLookup.htm
and not
http://www4.usa-swimming.org/infodrv/ntdbsearch/ntdbsearch.htm
The new system is scheduled to be released in June 2003 and I will be attending a training session at the USOC Training facility in mid June. The system will be Internet based and it will allow me to directly enter meet results and to make any corrections on the spot. Currently, I must import results into my system and then USA Swimming takes my files and imports them into the database. Needless to say (as we have all witnessed), this has caused many errors.
The standard procedure of submitting times will not change and I will be responsible to send in all “AA” (http://www.usa-swimming.org/Top_16/top16bas.pdf) or faster times to the database. I submit only those times from meets swum in CT and out of state meets must be submitted by the sanctioning LSC. From these times, the Top 16 lists are generated. In light of this, I have re done the application form and removed the National Reportable Top 16 category. Application - for CSI records only!
Please continue to check on your times and submit any questions or concerns to me at ljfrost@sbcglobal.net
CSI Database
The CSI best times database is maintained by Connecticut Swimming and is independent from USA Swimming's database. This database consists of times achieved by CSI-registered swimmers. All CSI meets are automatically imported into the CSI database and CSI clubs that attend USA Swimming sanctioned meets in other LSCs may submit results (sd3 result file and 2 hardcopies) to the CSI office and these meets will be imported as well. The CSI Database Query returns the top 25 swims per event. Top 16 are invited to the annual CSI Awards Banquet.
Not unlike USA Swimming, CSI has had problems with its database. Usually this is due to clubs entering swimmers in meets with incorrect or no USA Swimming number. CSI is working with club entry chairs to improve accuracy. Every registered athletes number is posted under the Team Query. This number must perfectly match the number that is used for entering meets.
CSI also maintains an Officials Database, Team Database and Individual Swimmer Database.
Please contact Nan Cooper with any questions and comments are much appreciated.
