       In Memory of Greg Chion

17 year old, Newtown H.S. Senior, Greg Chion lost his 9-month battle with leukemia on Thursday, October 26, 2000.  He was born July 26, 1983, in Danbury, CT.  He was diagnosed with leukemia in January, underwent a white-stem-cell transplant provided by his sister, Jennifer in June.

Greg, was active at the high school: co-editor of the yearbook, drum major in the marching band, member of the national honor society, captain of the NHS swim team, member of the spanish honor society, scholar athlete, recipient of the DeGroat Athletic Award. He was a former member of the St. Rose Youth group, and the Boy Scouts.

He was a former member of  FAST, the Regional YMCA of Western CT MAKO swim team, and prior to becoming ill, was a member of the Ridgefield Aquatic Club and was an avid sailor.

Greg was looking forward to getting back in shape and returning to swimming this fall/winter.  He was looking forward to studying architecture in
college next year. This young man will be sorely missed by all who knew him.  He made a profound impact on those who were lucky enough to call him friend.  He was a true gentle man; never saying an ill word about anyone.  Greg was a fair, fun-loving, decent competitor, who always strived for excellence;  a sportsman, in the truest sense of the word.

Funeral services were held yesterday, Oct. 30th, in Newtown.  The church was packed and a procession over a mile long made its way through the streets of Newtown to pay their final respects to one of Newtown's best and brightest.

How would Greg have felt about all of this ?  Probably, smiled, his  blue eyes sparkling, and said, "oy vey!"

Greg is the son of John and Ginny (Hudack) Chion of 10 Cobbler's Mill Road, Sandy Hook, CT
