Open
Water Swim Championship
By
Steve
Carroll, General Chair
Mark
your calendars now for one of the more unique and special events on our
2002 Long Course meet schedule. Saturday,
June 29th is the date of Connecticut
Swimming’s 2nd Annual Open Water Swim Championship, to be
held at the Madison Surf Club in Madison, CT and Connecticut Swimming is
once again pleased to announce that this open water championship will be
conducted in partnership with the United States Masters Swimming
organization. The Connecticut
Masters ran a terrific meet last year, and this year's meet promises
to surpass that.
For
the 100 or so athletes and coaches that attended last year’s
championship, you will remember the fun and excitement that our athletes
had last year, as well as the glorious weather we were fortunate to have
that day, and the festive awards atmosphere and picnics that followed.
Like last year, we will again be offering a one-mile open water swim to
all Connecticut Swimming athletes age 11 or older. Awards will be
presented immediately following the competition to the top 3 competitors
in each age group. As well, Top 16 performers in each age group will earn
automatic invitations to our 2002 Annual Awards Banquet in November.
For
those of you that have not experienced open-water swimming, this is a
terrific opportunity to experience your sport in an entirely different
manner than you have been accustomed. No
lanes, no walls, and no turns. The one-mile course is laid out using a
GPS system, and the course is clearly marked and will be patrolled by the
Madison Marine Patrol and lifeguards. In-water kayakers will keep swimmers
on course and guide them to the finish. And this year, we will introduce a
new electronic timing system to make certain the times are as accurate as
possible.
The
meet announcement for this meet is on our web-site at http://ctswim.org.
Pay close attention to the deadlines so that swimmers are eligible to
receive the free T-shirt and swim cap commemorating this event.
Swimmers,
let your coaches know that you want to be included in this year’s Open
Water Championships in Madison on June 29th. Entry applications
should be available through your coach as well as through the CSI
web-site.
Special thanks to Dave Parcells, Meet Director and Connecticut Masters for making this event possible to Connecticut swimmers!
Beneficiaries are the Shoreline Foundation Camp Scholarships and Madison Beach and Recreation Department.
