WEST POINT AND DOLPHINS ALUM TODD BOOKLESS SET TO FLY BLACKHAWKS IN TIKRET, IRAQ

Todd Bookless and Nick Cavataro

The Greenwich YWCA Dolphins Swim Team alum, Todd Bookless, is set to leave early next month for the US Army airbase outside of Takrit, Iraq. Bookless paid a visit to Dolphins Coach Nick Cavataro and the Masters Swim group earlier today and presented Cavataro with a mission patch. Cavataro presented Bookless with a team towel and water bottle.

Major Todd Bookless, 34, swam for the YWCA Dolphins from age 6-18 and went onto to a successful intercollegiate and academic career at the United States Military Academy at West Point. At West Point, the White Plains native, who now lives with his wife, Meredith in Ridgefield, competed on the intercollegiate Swim and Water Polo teams.

After his graduation from West Point in 1994 and commission as a Lieutenant, Bookless received flight training in US Army helicopters including operation of Chinooks and Blackhawks.

After 8 years of active duty, all in state side bases located in Texas and Kentucky, Major Bookless retired to the reserves and a job at Merrill Lynch. He was activated earlier this year and has been retrained and will be an Operations Officer with the Aviation Brigade of the 42nd Infantry Division. The AVN BDE as it is known, home base is out of Fort McArthur and McArthur Airport on Long Island, New York.

Major Bookless’ older brother and sister also swam for the Dolphins. Tom graduated from Ohio University ’92 and Allison from Ohio State in 1993. Bookless’ parents Alice and Tom reside in White Plains, NY.

And while we were racing in Connecticut......

Balad, Iraq

An email and pictures sent to GYWD Coach, Nick Cavataro, from Major Todd Bookless:

Nick,
Hope all is well.  It is crazy hot over here - most days are in the 120s.  We have a sandstorm today (visibility around 1/4 mile) so not much flying.  A quiet day in the Tactical Operations Center (TOC).  I finally found a pool in Iraq.  I went to Balad (between Baghdad and Samarra) for a convoy and we found a nice pool on the base.  I would have done a couple sets but they had no clock!  Take care and say hello to all.
Todd
