FAST TIMES AT:

Olympic Trials

Aside from the Olympics, the USA Swimming Olympic Trials hold the most prestige of any competitive swimming event held in the world.  Once every four years, premier USA athletes compete for berths on the USA Olympic Team and only the top two finishers in each event continue on to the Summer Olympic Games.  This summer the 2000 Olympic Trials sponsored by the Indiana Sports Corporation were held in Indianapolis, IN, August 9-16, 2000.

Qualifying for this elite competition were three Connecticut swimmers, Kelly Harrigan (unCAT), Kate Larson (UCON) and Ben Michaelson (SOCO).  Harrigan, 15, swimming her fastest yet, qualified in the 200 M back (2:19.63) at Junior Championships only a week before the Trials. Despite this heavy championship meet schedule, Harrigan finished 39th out of a field of 107 and won her heat.  Katie Larson, 19 and just completing her freshman year at UCONN qualified and competed in both the 100 M (1:14.26) and 200 M (2:39.98) breast, finishing 57th and 51st respectively.   Michaelson, 18, qualified for the Trials this past winter swimming collegiately. Competing in the 100 M fly, Michaelson swam a perfectly-paced raced coming from behind with a strong finish to take his heat.  Michaelson clocked a time of 55.03, finishing an outstanding 20th overall and establishing two new Connecticut records.

Not to be forgotten are former Connecticut swimmers qualifying for the Olympic Trials.  Dan Shevchik, formerly of WYW and CSI Swimmer of the Year, swam in the championship final of the 200 M backstroke, finishing 8th. Former WYW swimmers Nicole Duggan and Lauren Moore also competed along with Jamie and John Waters, formerly of GYWD, and Christina Stocki formerly of WWRX.
