Starting off the 2002 long course CSI championship season was the Connecticut Senior Open held July 11-14, 2002 at Wesleyan University. More than 400 athletes attended from Connecticut and surrounding states.
Eight individual and eight relay records were broken at Senior Open. Tammie Repass (SOCO) broke the senior Connecticut Record in the 200M Butterfly with a 2:17.03 and leading the men was Geoff Rathgeber (SOCO) who broke four 15-16 records: CT 200M Backstroke, 2:08.72; CT and Resident 200M IM, 2:08.93 and CT 400M IM, 4:38.40. Ben Michaelson (SOCO) took the CT 200M Butterfly and 200M IM senior records posting a 2:06.42 and a 2:08.75 respectively. Finally, John Waters (GYWD) swam a 1:54.05 200M Freestyle to take the CT record. SOCO senior men set 8 relay records: CT and Resident 200M Freestyle records, CT and Resident 200M Medley Relays, CT and Resident 400M Medley Relays, the CT 400M Freestyle relay record and the 800M Freestyle relay record.
Erica Meissner (ABF), 13, was the youngest athlete to swim a qualifying time for the Phillips 66 Senior National meet. Erica swam a 2:19.92 in the 200M backstroke taking more than 3 seconds off her preliminary time. Tammie Repass's 200M Butterfly earned her a national qualifying time as well as the CT record and Ben Michaelson qualified in the 50M Freestyle and 200M IM. Senior Nationals will be held August 12-17, 2002 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
