Next to Olympic Trials, Phillips 66 National Championships is
USA Swimming's most competitive, fastest and exciting meet, as elite athletes
from around the country vie for top place finishes. USA Swimming uses this
to meet to select its Pan
Pacific Championships team as well as its 2003 World Championships
team, the Duel in the Pool team, the Pan American Games team and the World
University Games team.
Eight top Connecticut athletes traveled to Ft. Lauderdale to swim in this
year's long course championship at the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Finalists were Ben Michaelson (SOCO), Tammie Repass (SOCO) and John Waters
(GYWD). Ben Michaelson's fastest swim brought him a fourth place in the 100M
butterfly (53.53), well under the Olympic Trials cut and breaking the CT
Resident record. This swim unofficially ranks Michaelson with the 4th
fastest American time for 2002. Tammie Repass's impressive swim in the
finals of the women's 200M Butterfly (2:13.98) unofficial ranks her as the 12th
fastest American woman for 2002 and put her well under the Olympic Trials cut.
John Waters swam the 200M freestyle finals with a 1:52.52 and the 100M freestyle
finals (52.05 and 51.62 in prelims).
Also, participating in nationals were Kelly Harrigan (CAT), Michael McLean (OMNI), Cassie Novak (CDEV), Geoff Rathgeber (SOCO) and James Veazey (UN). Kelly Harrigan's 200M backstroke swim broke the CT Resident 17/18 girls record (2:20.52).

The Speedo Champions Series was held this past August 1-4th in Buffalo, NY and was well attended by Connecticut swimmers. Numerous Connecticut athletes qualified for finals and Michael McLean (OMNI) took the Men's High Point award, followed by runner-up Geoff Rathgeber (SOCO). Congratulations to record-breakers Michael McLean (OMNI) and Dan Vitagliano (OMNI). Michael broke the 17/18 boys 400M Resident record swimming a 4:00.35 and Dan broke the 15/16 boys 400M freestyle with a time of 4:09.13. Congratulations!

The 2002 Zone Team traveled to Buffalo, NY for the Long Course All-Star Meet held August 7-10, 2002. Competing against 12 other LSC teams from Virginia to Maine, this year's long course team finished 7th overall. The girls' team finished 9th and the boys' team 6th. Congratulations!
Katie Gardocki (BEAR) broke the 10/U Resident record in the 100M butterfly (1:15.00), finishing second and taking a first in the 200M freestyle. Aurora Lee (HNHS) took 3 first-place medals in the 100, 200 breast and 400 IM.
